Abstract

Metal spinning is one of the oldest methods of chip-less formation. Metal spinning is the technique to produce axisymmetric part or component over rotating mandrel with the help of rigid tool known as roller. Conventional sheet spinning has a significant negative impact on surface quality of product items. Burnishing process is surface finishing processes to improve surface quality. In the present work a novel tool combining the two processes of conventional spinning with burnishing in the same stroke. The novel tool consists of two rollers performing the conventional spinning followed by two balls to perform the burnishing process. The set of two rollers and two balls is mounted on jaws of lathe chuck which works as a holder for the tool parts.
The experimental work was conducted in order to test the proposed tool and investigate the influence of the main burnishing parameters (mandrel rotational speed, feed and burnishing force) on the process load and the product quality. The response of the product quality and required load to process parameters such as rotational speed (46,76,150 and 230 rpm), axial feed (0.15,0.3,0.6 and 1.21 mm/rev), burnishing load (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 Kgf).
In the present work, It was found that the burnishing force, rotation speed, and feed rate are the most pronounced parameters, which have great effects on the workpieces surface during the burnishing process. A simple, inexpensive and newly designed ball-burnishing tool, with interchangeable adapter for using different ball diameters, was used throughout the experimental work presented in this work.
