Abstract

Background: Pranayama is a systematic method of inducing complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation. Pranayama is a breath technique that involves controlling your breath in different styles and lengths .The practice of paranyama or yoga breathing , is alternative to pulmonary rehabilitation to improve functional capacity ,circulatory process of body and boost respiratory system .The purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the paranyama exercises on functional capacity in with interstitial lung disease. Patients and methods: Sixty patients of both sexes(26 men & 34 women) , their age ranged from 40 to 50 years, their body mass index ranged from 25 to 30 Kg/m² with interstitial lung disease , they were selected from the Outpatient clinic / chest department /El-Kasr El Aini Hospital, Cairo, Egypt .They were assigned into two groups equal in numbers. Study group (A): thirty patient patients who received paranyama exercises in addition to medical treatment for eight weeks; and Control group (B): thirty patients who received medical treatment only for eight weeks .The treatment session for both groups was conducted for 30 to 45 minutes, three days per week, for eight weeks. Evaluations :All patients in both groups (A&B) were done before starting and after the end of the study (8 weeks), through measuring Arterial blood gases , blood levels of total leucocyte count , Hemoglobin , and Red blood cells, dypsnea scale assessed byModified Medical Research Council , and health related quality of life assessment using the SF-12 Health Survey Questionnaire. The results revealed that there was a statistical significant decrease (P<0.05) in partial pressure of carbon dioxide PaCO2 with percentage 20.32% , bicarbonate HCO3 with percentage 18.17% , red blood cells count RBCs with percentage 11.68% , total leucocyte count TLC with percentage 37.47% , and dypsnea scale by MMRC with a statistical significant increase (P<0.05) in PH with percentage 0.27% , partial pressure of oxygen PaO2 with percentage 25.09% , oxygen saturation SaO2 with percentage 2.54% , hemoglobin Hb with percentage 5.16 % and physical score with percentage of 419.48% and mental score quality of life with percentage of 237.28 for group (A)within each group. Conclusion: paranyama exercises are important in improving blood gases, dypsnea and quality of life in patient with interstitial lung disease (ILD). So paranyama is very effective when adjunct to conventional therapy for pulmonary rehabilitation programs for ILD patients.
