Abstract

Penaeid prawns are distributed worldwide in tropical and
temperate latitudes (Holthuis, 1980). The family Penaeidae is
arguably the most valuable group of marine species in the world.
Although annual stock sizes fluctuate widely, few stock
recruitment relationships have been demonstrated for the family
(Garcia, 1983 and1985) and the role of the environment in larval
and post larval mortality is poorly known.
The biological management of prawn stocks is frequently
limited by inadequate knowledge of factors affecting production.
An understanding of the basis of resources renewal provides a
back ground for management direction.
