Abstract
persistent post-operative neurosensory disturbances of the inferior alveolar nerve are still one of the major complications after BSSO. The incidence has decreased over the years due to improved techniques and the use of different instruments. However, most recent series still report postoperative persistent hypesthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve in more than 10% of the patients up to 48%.
Aim of the study:
The aim of the study is to determine whether the use of separators over chisels will affect the postoperative neurosensory function of the inferior alveolar nerve.
Patients and methods:
This was randomized clinical trial enrolled 36 side (18 patients) with mandibular skeletal class III malocclusion with age ranged from 18 to 25 years selected from the outpatient’s clinic of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department, Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. They randomly distributed into two group; control group enrolled nine patients (18 side) underwent BSSO with chisels, and study group enrolled nine patients (18 side) underwent BSSO by separators and post operative sensory function was tested by Von Frey filaments and Two-point discrimination, incidence of bad split was recorded intraoperatively, oedema was measured by a ruler and post operative pain was calculated by VAS.
