Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a widespread disease worldwide and in Egypt. It is linked to the oxidative stress which may be genotoxic to the cells by producing DNA damage via the formation of ROS. Several pathogenic processes are involved in the development of diabetes including autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic β-cells with consequent insulin deficiency (T1DM) and abnormalities that result in insufficient insulin secretion or resistance to insulin (T2DM). Recently, oxidative DNA damage has been implicated in diabetes pathogenesis. Mirazid (MZ) is an Egyptian anti-parasitic drug extracted from myrrh (the oleo-gum-resin of the Commiphora plant) that has anti-inflammatory, antitumor and hypoglycemic effects. |
