Abstract

Background: Suicide is a global burden among the leading causes of death.
Aim of the Work: This study aimed to investigate the suicide risk in male substance abuse patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Patients and Methods: This study is a Cross-sectional descriptive study was approved by the ethical committee of the Department of Neuropsychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, conducted at Okasha Institute of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University Hospitals which is located in Cairo and serves a catchment area of about the third of Greater Cairo. It serves both urban and rural areas, including areas around Greater Cairo as well.
Results: Personality disorders, borderline personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder were significantly associated with death wish, ideation, and suicide attempts. Individuals with polysubstance were more likely to have suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Family history of addiction was significantly associated with increased suicide risk.
Conclusion: It is important to underscore the importance of comprehensive assessment, early intervention, and ongoing support to mitigate this risk and promote long-term recovery and well-being.
