Abstract

Cirrhosis is one of the most degenerative diseases worldwide; it is usually accompanied by circadian sleep disorders, which justifies research efforts to enhance treatment of these symptoms. Locomotor activity and melatonin hormone level are two characteristic circadian rhythms. The hepatic failure was produced by CCl4.
The current study aimed to: 1) Develop a reliable setup for recording of the circadian locomotor activity rhythms. 2) Investigate the effect of treatment timing of CCl4 on the locomotor activity and serum melatonin rhythms at two time points one in daytime and the other in the nighttime. 3) Examine the possible recovery following the treatment. It also illustrated that the time of treatment affects its outcome. This might have significant implications in health and research fields. We conceive it will actually be useful in the treatment by melatonin to cirrhotic patients. Treatment of circadian dysfunction is not an attempt to correct a biological curiosity but a measure that may impact on areas of daily functioning that profoundly affect the quality of life of these patients, including the poor sleep pattern and chronic fatigue that plague many individuals with chronic liver disease.
