Abstract Respiratory distress syndrome (also called hyaline membrane disease).is the most common cause of respiratory distress in premature infants, correlating with structural and functional lung immaturity. It occurs in significant number of premature infants born annually. However, full term newborn with a gestational age between 37 and 42 weeks can be affected as well. Severity and incidence of RDS are inversely related to GA which affect up to 92% of neonates born at 24-25 weeks, 88% at 26-27 weeks, 76% at 28-29 weeks and 57% at 30-31 weeks. |
