Abstract

Obesity increases both the risk of asthma and asthma severity and is a well-known risk factor for insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome (MS) in children and adolescents, Aim and objectives; to examine the association of dyslipidemia and asthma, the interaction effect of asthma and obesity on hyperlipidemia, the association among obesity, insulin sensitivity/resistance, and metabolic syndrome in children with and without asthma, Subjects and methods; This was cross sectional study, was conducted Pediatric Allergy and Chest Clinic & the Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolism Pediatric Unit (DEMPU) and the general outpatient clinic at Cairo University Hospitals on 168 children divided into four groups according to presence of asthma and their BMI as follows: (group1); Healthy group (HG), (group2); Non-obese asthmatic children (NOA), (group3); Obese non asthmatic children (ONA), (group4); Obese asthmatic children (OA), Result; Asthmatic group was significantly higher than non-asthmatic with p value 0.001 as regards HDL; Asthmatic group was significantly lower than non-asthmatic with p value 0.004 as regards TC/HDL, with p value 0.002 as regards LDL/HDL and with p value 0.005 as regards non-HDL/HDL, Conclusion; Children with obesity and asthma are associated with more severe asthma symptoms, frequent and severe exacerbation. Obesity and insulin resistance are common findings in asthmatic children which need proper estimation either through anthropometric measurement or glucose and insulin indices which significantly differ among different groups of the study and had significant correlation with body mass index
