Abstract

Alopecia areata is a common type of hair loss or alopecia in humans. The exact pathophysiology of AA is currently unknown. Several lines of evidence indicate that the immune system, inflammation, and coagulation are simultaneously activated in autoimmune
and immune-mediated diseases. AA is an autoimmune disease, where hair is destroyed by cytotoxic T lymphocytes directed against the hair follicle.Certain circulating inflammatory cytokines and markers are increased in patients with AA. Pro-inflammatory cytokines induce the expression of tissue factor which is the main initiator of coagulation. CBC parameters have been introduced as diagnostic biomarkers for many diseases associated with the inflammatory process. Also, patients with AA are more likely to have abnormal thyroid function tests.Aim of the study:The aim of this work is to evaluate the serum level of some biochemical (hematological and inflammatory) markers in alopecia areata in order to assess their possible role in the pathogenesis and severity of this
disease.
