Abstract

Abstract
The pathogenesis and diagnosis of subclinical pregnancy toxemia remain elusive and need further investigation in pregnant does. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the typical properties of hepatic venous hemodynamics by Doppler ultrasonography as well as altered serum cortisol and biochemical parameters concentrations in pregnant does with subclinical pregnancy toxemia (SCPT). For each doe, an ultrasonographic examination was used to detect the pregnancy status which revealed that there were 70 pregnant does at late stage of pregnancy and 10 non- pregnant does. Detection of the blood glucose level was the first procedure that was performed for all animals, which reported that 50 does (10 non pregnant does and 40 pregnant does) had normo-glycemic (> 40 mg/dL), and 30 does had hypoglycemic (< 40 mg/dl). All 70 pregnant does were classified based on the blood serum of β-hydroxybutyric acid (βHBA) concentration, pregnant does were categorized into control positive group (βHBA concentrations < 0.8 mmol/L; n = 40) and SCPT group (βHBA concentrations > 0.8 mmol/L; n = 30). DRAMISKI 4vet slim diagnostic ultrasound scanner was used for diagnosis of SCPT. Total serum cortisol level was quantitative using chemiluminescent immunoassay. Serum glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDH-cholesterol and liver and renal function tests were measured by colorimetric and kinetic methods. Liver ultrasonography of does with SCPT had been shown mild fatty infiltration with rounded margin, which was characterized by hyperechoic area, while the gall bladder appeared to be a thickly walled and anechoic construction. There was a significant decrease in the values of portal vein diameter, portal vein area, portal mean velocity and portal blood flow in SCPT does compared to control pregnant does (P<0.05). Serum cortisol, triglycerides, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urea and creatinine concentrations were significantly higher in SCPT does than control group (P<0.05), while glucose and Cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, total proteins, albumin concentrations and A/G ratio were decreased in SCPT does than control group (P<0.05). In conclusions, SCPT was associated with altered biochemical parameters in pregnant does. Elevated cortisol concentrations during course of disease could indicate increased adrenal output in response to stress. Doppler ultrasound could be aid in diagnosis of SCPT in does.
