Abstract

Purpose : The commonest surgical procedure for women is cesarean delivery. Postpartum hemorrhage and intra-operative blood during cesarean delivery is a major concern to all obstetricians. This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of the adjuvant use of misoprostol and oxytocin versus carbetocin in decreasing intra-operative blood loss in cesarean delivery.
Methods: This was a randomized controlled clinical trial that was conducted in Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital (ASUMH) from November 2022 till April 2023 on pregnant women planned for cesarean section recruited from outpatient antenatal clinic of ASUMH. 94 patients were enrolled in this study and were divided into two groups: group A (The control group): 47 patients who received Oxytocin (20 IU IV infusion on 1000 ml of normal saline solution) plus misoprostol (600 micrograms rectal), group B (study group): 47 patients who received 100 micrograms Carbetocin IV slowly.
Results: Intraoperative blood loss was higher in patients who received oxytocin plus misoprostol compared to patients who received carbetocin with p value (<0.001 ).
Conclusion: Carbetocin is an effective drug for decreasing intra-operative blood loss during cesarian section with clinical superiority to oxytocin plus misoprostol.
