Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of infra-red low-level laser (LLLT) and sham laser on patients suffering from peri-cranial tenderness related to tension-type headache. Sixty patients diagnosed as having peri-cranial tenderness and tension-type headache. All patients were selected from the pain management units and Out-Patients Clinics of Neurology, Sohag University Hospitals, General Hospitals and Military Hospital in Sohag City (Upper Egypt), Egypt. All patients were divided into two equal main groups, and each group of them divided into two sub-groups randomly. All patients have signed on informed consent before starting the study.
Every patient from real and sham groups was received 15 sessions along five weeks by three sessions every week every other day according to acupuncture points related to their trigger points (TrPs) ) of peri-cranial tenderness related to tension-type headache directly to the acupuncture points and perpendicular probe contact to the skin, up to ten points. Both groups with a time of one minute for each point.
All patients were assessed by total tenderness score to measure tenderness (pain) related to tension-type headache, frequency and duration of peri-cranial tenderness with tension-type headache attacks, measure the total antioxidants capacity (TAC) to determine status of antioxidants and Wong-Baker FACES pain rating scale for pain assessment.
