Abstract

Excessive and insufficient gestational weight gain have been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including small for gestational age (SGA), large for gestational age (LGA), macrosomia, cesarean delivery, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preeclampsia, postpartum weight retention, offspring obesity.
The current study included 550 pregnant females, their age ranged between 18 – 42 years.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of gestational weight gain on pregnancy outcomes in pregnant women with different pre-pregnancy body mass indeces (BMI) to establish optimal GWG for each BMI category.
Results
We found commonest complications were infant complications 23% followed by medical complications in 22.5%, then obstetric complications in 19.6%, and LGA in 16.7%. The commonest medical complication was UTI in 18.7% followed by valvovaginitis in 15.6%, anemia in 9% then then DM in 6. %, hypertension in 2.2% and lastly cholycystitis in 1. %. The commonest obstetric complication was PROM in 15.4% followed by preterm labor in 11. % and lastly malpresentation in 6.5%.
The study revised medical records of pregnant women who will attend to antenatal care unit at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine Minia University in the previous year (2021).
