Abstract

Objective: This study was designed to investigate the effect of transcutaneous
electrical nerve stimulation on the level of interleukin “6” and “10” post pleurodesis.
Methods: Sixty patients of both sexes with an age range of 30 to 40 years old with
moderate pain severity post pleurodesis were selected from Intensive Care Unit,
National Cancer Institute, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. This study was
conducted one-hour after recovery from anesthesia for 48 hrs. All patients were
divided randomly into two groups A and B., group A: 30 patients under went
pleurodesis were received TENS two sessions per day para incisionally in addition to
medications., group B: 30 patients were received medications in addition to placebo
effect of TENS. Results: Regarding the variables (IL6, IL 10 and CPOT), Statistical
analysis shown that there was a significant change of pre-post treatment at groups A,
(p<0.05). Between-group analysis revealed no significant change in pre value of all
variables as (p>0.05) while post-treatment there was a significant change in all
variables as (p<0.05). Conclusion: TENS is useful as an adjunctive to NSAIDs and
opioids for reducing the level of interleukin “6” and “10” and in turn pain relief post
pleurodesis and it leads to reduction in subsequent medications requirements.
