Abstract

Colostomy formation is often a life-saving procedure across various conditions but is still associated with significant morbidity; it is considered a double-edged sword and has always been a challenge. Aim of the study: To evaluate the effect of the empowerment program about colostomy care for mothers on complications among their infants. Design: Quasi-experimental design was used to achieve the aim of the current study. Sample: A convenient sample of all available infants (60) undergoing colostomy operation and their mothers (60) participated in the current study, divided into two equal groups: 30 as a control group who received the hospital routine care and 30 as a study group who were subjected to the empowerment program. Setting: The current study was conducted in three settings at Cairo University Specialized Pediatric Hospital (CUSPH) (surgical neonatal intensive care unit, in-patient surgical unit, and the out-patient surgery clinic).Tools for data collection: Tool I structured interview questionnaire; Tool II mothers’ knowledge and reported-practices assessment sheet (pre-posttest); Tool III observational checklist of colostomy care and tool IV postoperative complications recording sheet. Results: There were statistically significant differences regarding the total mean score of mothers’ knowledge, reported practice, and skills in both groups, complications were higher in the control group, and mothers’ skills were affected by their knowledge. Conclusion: The current study concluded that after the implementation of the colostomy empowerment program, there was a significant improvement in the level of knowledge, reported practices, and skills among mothers in the study group. Infants in the study group were exposed to fewer postoperative complications regarding colostomy-related complications and peristomal skin complications than infants in the control group. Recommendation: It was recommended that integrate the colostomy empowerment program for mothers in the pediatric surgery ward and incorporate it into the discharge plan.
