Abstract

T2DM is a common disease characterized by relative insulin deficiency and peripheral insulin resistance. DN is a common diabetic complication affecting up to half of patients with DM. It is characterized by glomerular hyperfiltration, microalbuminuria, GFR decline, leading to ESRD. However, the pathogenesis of DN is extremely complex.Autophagy inhibition has been reported to promote DM development as well as its progression to DN via causing an accumulation of dysfunctional and damaged mitochondria with alteration of mitochondrial morphology and function, high levels of ROS and metabolic stress wich result in insulin resistance. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate some autophagy markers in T2DM patients with and without DN and also in non-diabetic subjects to study the role of autophagy in the development of T2DM and the progression to DN and to study the correlation between autophagy markers and other markers of diabetic nephropathy.
