Abstract

Two experiments were carried out during two successive seasons of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 at the Experimental Farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt. The first experiment was carried out to investigate the response of Cynara cardunculus L. plants to different nitrogen sources (urea, ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate) at three doses 0, 40, 60 and 80 unit/fed. and their interactions. The second experiment cardoon plants was subjected to several leaves harvests (one, two, three and four harvests). The third experiment was carried out to investigate the changes in growth parameters and chemical components during the growth season from Feb. to June month. The fourth experiment in vitro studies on Cynara cardunculus. The results showed that ammonium nitrate as a source of nitrogen at doses of 60 or 80 unit/fed. improved the most of the growth characters of C. cardunculus in terms, plant height, number of leaves/plant and fresh and dry weight of leaves. The same treatments were the best in improving the active constituents of this plant in terms of carbohydrate %, Flavonoids and polyphenol content as well as the chlorogenic acid content and oil content in seeds
