Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate, through laboratory screening, the activity of 14 different plant species by using 3 different solvents (acetone, hexane, and ethanol) against the 2nd and 4th instar larvae of culex quinquefasciatus and anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes. from preliminary tests acetone extracts were shown to be more effective than other solvent extracts. Higher mortality (%) was recorded for extracts of Conocarpus lancifolius, Pluchea diosecroidis, calotropis procera, solenostemma argel, Datura stramonium, cassia italica and then followed by eucalyptus camaldulensis, ambrosia maritima, argemone mexicana, and azadirachta indica. While aristolochia braceolata, cassia senna, euphorbia milli, and Nerium oleander extracts exhibited moderate to little activity. Only 6 plant species (A. maritima, A. mexicana, C. italica, C. lancifolius, P. diosecroidis, and S. argel) were selected to complete the final study. C. lancifolius and P. diosecroidis acetone extracts were the most effective against both mosquito species. C. lancifolius recorded lower LC50 and LC90 values (21.7 ppm, 39.1ppm and 21.2 ppm, 63.4 ppm) against 2nd and 4th instar larvae of culex respectively, and then followed by P. diosecroidis extract - 23.8 ppm, 39.4 ppm and 24 ppm, 71.2 ppm
