Abstract

DNA and botanical profiling of Solanum seaforthianum Andr., Solanum macrocarpon L., were conducted. Phytochemical screening, extraction and examination of the extractives were also done. Investigation of the lipoidal content included GLC analysis of the lipoidal matter and isolation and identification of the major constituents of the n-hexane extract. Compounds isolated from this extract were identified as lupeol (H₁), campsterol (H₂), Ý-sitosterol (H3) and stigmasterol glucoside (H₄). Isolation and identification of the major constituents of the total glycoalkaloid fraction of the aerial parts of Solanum seaforthianum Andr.. Compounds isolated from TGA fraction were identified as glycosidal alkaloids solamargine (A₁) and solasonine (A₂) and Solasodine aglycone (A₃). The total ethanol extracts and both n-butanol and TGA fractions of S. seaforthianum Andr and S. macrocarpon L. were found to be safe and non-toxic. TGA fraction of S. macrocarpon was the most potent as anti-inflammatory with a relative potency 159% compared with indomethatin, the highest observed analgesic activity (after 30 min to 2 hours) was observed to TGA fraction of S. macrocarpon L. with potency 111-58% followed by TGA fraction of S. seaforthianum Andr. with 84- 46% potency compared to standard indomethacin drug, S. seaforthianum Andr.
