Abstract

Osteoprotegerin (OPG), a protein of the tumor necrosis factor superfamily, has been postulated to play a significant role in the pathophysiology of athero sclerosis in the past years. In acute coronary syndromes, OPG has been linked to clinical outcome. However, previous relatively small sized studies did not differentiate between patients with acute non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and patients with acute STEMI. Consequently, data on the prognostic impact of OPG in high - risk STEMI patients are lacking. Levels of circulating OPG are higher in patients with acute myocardial infarction (STEMI and non - STEMI) than in a healthy control group or in stable coronary artery disease. Recent studies also demonstrated an association of OPG with infarct size (IS) measured by single photon emission tomography (SPECT) and angiographic no - reflow
