Abstract

The aim of our study to assess the value of the synergistic effect of superpulsed low level laser, red light, infrared light and SMF therapy compared to low level laser therapy solely in enhancing the healing of mandibular fractures using digital radiographic densitometric analysis. The present study comprised twenty four patients suffered from mandibular fractures and were divided into three groups; the first group represented the control group, the second represented the low level laser therapy group and the third the combined therapy group. All patients were treated with closed reduction then allocated into one of the three groups. Follow up digital panoramic examination was performed at two weeks, four weeks and six weeks period. All the images were subjected to digital densitometric image analysis to evaluate the bone healing at the fracture sites over time. In addition, follow up clinical examination was performed to assess the improvement of pain and paresthesia. The present study results revealed that there was an overall mean percentage increase of the bone density at six weeks in all the studied groups which was highest at the low level laser group followed by the control group then the combined therapy group (15%, 9.5% and 5% respectively); however, among the three groups, these changes were statistically non significant
