Abstract

Radical prostatectomy is the current treatment of choice for prostate cancer but frequently results in erectile dysfunction with a concomitant reduced quality - of - life. The present study investigated the potential beneficial effects of transplanting mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the corpus cavernosum in a rat model of bilateral cavernous nerve (CN) crush injury. Twenty four adult male albino rats were randomly divided into three groups: A control group (Control group), injury group, which received a single intracavernous injection of normal saline just after cavernous nerve crushing (Injury group), and mesenchymal stem cells group (MSCs group), which received a single intracavernous injection of mesenchymal stem cells immediately after CN crushing. Control animals underwent a sham surgery without further treatment. Four weeks after CN crushing or sham surgery, all rats were sacrificed and penile tissues were harvested for histological analysis
