Abstract

Comparative study between morphine and dexmedetomidine for postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing cancer surgeries. The aim of the study is to compare the postoperative pain-relieving quality and effect on stress response of a continuous infusion of dexmedetomidine (low & high doses) with I.V morphine infusion in patients undergoing cancer surgeries. In conclusion, morphine has better postoperative analgesia than dexmedetomidine (low and high dose) during the first 40 hours postoperatively apart from 16 and 20 hours postoperatively; there is no difference in analgesia between the two drugs. Dexmedetomidine (low and high dose) provides analgesia, sedation and alleviates stress response in the form of lowering blood glucose and serum cortisol. However low dexmedetomidine is better than high dose dexmedetomidine as it has less adverse effects. Further and larger studies are needed to assess the optimum regimen of dexmedetomidine for postoperative analgesia
