Abstract

Water and ethanol were used as chemical solvents for propolis in this study, and biological activity on bacterial cells(gram negative and gram positive) Hep-2 cell line and splenocytes were studied in addition to quantitative determination of total phenolic and flavonoid by spectrophotometric assay. Results: Antibacterial activity of EEP and WEP studied on (S.aurus, B.subilitus and E .coli). The highest value of inhibition zone for S.aurus in mm was recorded for concentration 100 æg/ ml (14.67±2.08 and 7.00±1.00) for EEP and WEP respectively. The highest value of inhibition zone for B.subilitus in mm was recorded for concentration 100 æg/ ml (15.67±1.53 and 5.33±2.08) for EEP and WEP respectively. The highest value of inhibition zone for E .coli in mm was recorded for concentration 100 æg/ ml (8.33±0.58 and 2.67±1.53) for EEP and WEP respectively, with p value < 0.05. Cytotoxicity of EEP and WEP studied on Hep-2 cell. EEP of concentration in og/ml (0.01, 0.1, 1.0, 10 and 100) reduced the cell viability from 83.05% to 37.83% and WEP with the same concentration reduced the cell viability from 86.44%, to 38.53%. In vitro assays, an inhibitory effect of EEP and WEP on splenocytes proliferation reached maximum effect at a concentration of 100 æg/ml for both EEP (2663.22±145.19 ) and WEP (6520.82±295.19) with (p <0.05)
