Abstract

Background: Maternal prenatal screening for group B streptococci (GBS) is mandatory for proper intrapartum chemoprophylaxis in order to reduce the incidence of neonatal GBS infections. Culturing of vaginal and anorectal swab specimens in selective broth is the screening procedure recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Methods: The present study conducted in 2014 from November to January at the outpatient clinic of the antenatal care of Kasr El-Aini University Hospital. Two high vaginal swabs were obtained from 80 pregnant women (35-37) weeks of gestation. One vaginal swab was plated on 5% sheep blood agar plates. The other swab immersed into selective enrichment broth Granada{u2122} Biphasic Broth. Negative broth cultures were sub cultured onto 5% sheep blood agar plates. Conformation of GBS growth was done by CAMP test. Results and conclusion: The carriage rate of GBS was 11.25% among pregnant women. Using of Granada{u2122} Biphasic Broth reduced the turnaround time needed for detection of GBS in comparison with conventional culture
