Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare monocanalicular versus bicanalicular silicone intubation for the management of acquired nasolacrimal duct stenosis (NLDS) in adults; as regards the success rate, improvement in tear drainage, tube tolerance and complications. Results: Patient ages ranged from 20 to 67 years (mean, 42.98; SD, 11.69). The overall success was achieved in 50 patients (83.33%), with complete success in 32 eyes (53.33%), partial success in 18 eyes (30%), and failure in 10 eyes (16.67%). There was no statistically significant difference between both studied groups for all categories of postoperative outcome. Both tubes were well tolerated with high and persistent patient satisfaction and tear drainage improvement throughout follow up. Thirteen cases were early removed (mean time 5.208 months; SD, 1.54), with no significant effect on the overall success rate in both groups. Complications included peripunctal granulomas, slit punctum, canalicular cheese wiring, dacryocystitis and tube extrusion, with no effect on final outcome.
