Abstract

Sport is one of the important and necessary activates in humans’ life from the health and recreational side. Sports places have become well-known and spread all over the world. One of these places are called the gymnasium. It is so important for gymnasium to be air-conditioned in order to create suitable environmental conditions, which provide thermal comfort, maintain health and lead to high performance for persons. In this present thesis, numerical investigations were performed to study the flow patterns and thermal comfort in an air - conditioned gymnasium located in Cairo city, Egypt. The CFD software (FLUENT 15) was used in this thesis to make the predictions of air distributions inside the gymnasium. The gymnasium is air-conditioned by commercial ceiling type 4- way cassette air conditioner units. Four cases have been investigated by changing the discharge angle of the air conditioner and number of occupants. In addition, the effects of occupants, lighting, and electrical sports machines on the room airflow were considered. The main task in this thesis is to obtain the best thermal comfort conditions for persons inside the gymnasium by changing the discharge angle of the ceiling type 4- way cassette air conditioner, with varying in number of persons inside the gymnasium
