Abstract

Objective & Design: In this prospective study (Randomized control study) 40 patients diagnosed as AFS were divided into 2 groups. group A received systemic and local steroids while group B received local steroids only. Total serum IgE was evaluated and patients were followed up for recurrence. The aim is to evaluate the relationship between the effect of steroid therapy and level of total serum IgE and the prognosis of allergic fungal sinusitis, possibility of recurrence and level of aggression. Material: All patients were diagnosed as AFS according to major and minor criteria, treated surgically then divided into 2 groups. Total serum IgE was evaluated post-operative and patients were followed up for recurrence. Only immune-compromised patients were excluded. Results: Patients who had recurrence 6 months post-operative were 17. 6 of them were on Systemic steroids and 11 were on Local steroids only. 12 patients had mild recurrence, 4 patients moderate and 1 patient severe. Patients with <10% increase in serum IgE had no recurrence while those who had >10% increase in serum IgE had some sort of recurrence. Conclusion: In conclusion, Systemic steroids are effective in reducing recurrence rates and serum IgE is reliable in follow up of patients
