Abstract This research aims to examine the role of the EU in the process of political reform in Turkey during the period (1999 - 2010) through the study of tools and policies of the European Union used to support the political reform process, with emphasis on the study of the influence of the EU political conditionality in supporting and stimulating Turkey to accelerate the process of political reform in order to become a member of the european union. The research also aims to study the internal and external factors that have helped in the process of political reform adopted by the Turkish government after the european union decided to grant Turkey 2the candidacy status3 for the membership of the european union” in 1999. After studying the initiatives and policies of the european union in Turkey the research concluded that the role of the EU in the political reform process was effective and very influential by stimulating and funding many of the reformist political programs in Turkey, which relates to the support of democratic values and human rights and the defense of minorities rights and promote the role of women in Turkish society, as the initiatives and policies of the european union contributed to give more freedoms related to the freedom of expression ,religion, the press and publishing houses, broadcasting and television and education |
