Abstract

Spinal block is the most convenient and safe anesthesia during caesarean Section. But there are incidences where spinal block does not work and other methods of anesthesia have to be employed. This study was done in 301 female patients who underwent caesarean Section at obstetric department at Kasr-Aliny Hospital, Cairo, Egypt from 1st June 2014 to end of August 2014 to find the rate of failure of spinal block in Caesarean Section and look for the causes of failure. All the patients scheduled for elective cesarean section in the obstetric theatre in kasr-Alainy were included in the study. Patients with fatal complications requiring general anesthesia, patients requiring additional intervention, contraindication of spinal anesthesia, and other types of neuroaxial anesthesia such as epidural anesthesia and/or combined spinal epidural anesthesia were excluded from the study. Of the total 301 patients ( with the above mentioned included criteria ) who received spinal block, 15.3% (46 /301) needed further intervention whatever conversion to general anesthesia or the need for further administration of intravenous agents (ketamine, Diazepam and /or propofol ) only
