Abstract

Hyperlipidemia refers to the elevated levels of lipids and cholesterol in the blood, and is
also identified as dyslipidemia, which describe the manifestations of different disorders of
lipoprotein metabolism. Although elevated low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) is
thought to be the best indicator of atherosclerosis risk, dyslipidemia can also described by
elevation of total cholesterol (TC) and/or triglycerides (TG), as well as low levels of high
density lipoprotein cholesterol “HDL”.
Decisions about treatment of elevated lipids currently focus on the LDL cholesterol
level as well as the cardiovascular risk status of the individual.
