Abstract

Openings in RC flat slabs are one of the critical factors that influence the punching shear strength of the slab. This study experimentally investigates the effects of openings on the punching shear strength of flat slabs without shear reinforcement. Tests were performed on fourteen flat slab specimens considering the opening size, location, shape and compressive strength of reinforced concrete as test variables. The measured punching shear strengths of the test specimens are compared with the predictions of several concrete design codes. Experimental results demonstrate that the size, distance to the supporting column of an opening and compressive strength of reinforced concrete have a significant effect on the punching shear behavior of two-way RC slabs, geometric shape of opening (square or circle) barely affects the punching shear strength capacity and the ACI, CSA, and ECP codes show underestimated value of the punching shear strength compared with the DIN & BS codes by not adding the flexural reinforcement in their design equations.
