Abstract Based on the research findings, it is concluded that the suicidal victims have employed 9 types of figures of speech in the 42 extracts. They are metaphor, simile, personification, paradox, antithesis, figurative - 134 - idioms, euphemism, repetition and apostrophe. The most used type of these figures of speech is paradox which is used 12 times. In this regard, it is concluded that the suicidal victims tend to contrast their sufferings in the world of reality and the comfort they expect to get after killing themselves. As the second most used type, metaphor is used 11 times. By employing metaphor, it is deduced that the suicidal victims prefer to indirectly compare between two dissimilar objects. Such comparison enables the victims to draw conceptual metaphors which, in turn, allow readers to re-conceptualize one object in terms of another. In contrast to metaphor, there is simile which is adopted 4 times. Through the use of simile, the suicidal victims make a direct comparison between dissimilar objects using ’as’ and ’like’. The use of such simile allows readers to conceptually create image schemata of the objects being compared. Moreover; it is concluded that there is personification which is applied 4 times. By using personification, the suicidal victims are personifying their battles against depression and other mental disorders. In this perspective, the personification enables the victims to describe their inner thought vividly. Therefore, it makes readers better understand the victims’ motivations for committing suicide. Also, there is antithesis which is employed 3 times. Through the use of antithesis, the victims are able to bring two contradictory ideas within the same sentence. Therefore, - 135 - the antithesis highlights the difference between the two ideas and shows which one is more logical. Equally in number of occurrence to antithesis, |
