Abstract OSCC constitutes more than 90% of all oral malignant neoplasms.Despite significant advances in cancer therapeutics in the last three decades, the 5-year survival rate for OSCC has not improved significantly and more than 50% of patients have experienced relapse. Recent research indicated that CSCs are major players in the processes of tumor initiation, progression, and recurrence. They represent the driving force behind tumor aggressiveness via generating cells with aggressive phenotype, thus enhancing cancer progression. Acquiring stem-like properties can be manifested by the expression of SOX2. SOX2 is an effective gene involved in carcinogenesis by promoting CSC formation, proliferation, EMT, invasion, migration, sphere, and colony formation, as well as resistance to apoptosis and therapy. |
