Abstract

The intention of the proposed work is to study the extraction of phycocyanin pigment from blue green algae and to study its activity against pathogenic bacteria.C-phycocyanin
(C-PC) is a blue pigment in cyanobacteria, rhodophytes and cryptophytes with fluorescent and antioxidative properties. C-PC is presently extracted from open pond cultures of the cyanobacterium Arthrospira platensis although these cultures are not very productive and open for contaminating organisms. Phycocyanin (PC) is one of the water-soluble accessory pigments of cyanobacteria species, and its concentration in aquatic systems is used to estimate the presence and relative abundance of blue-green algae. Phycocyanin is found in almost all cyanobacteria and may be used as a proxy of cyanobacterial biomass. However, recent research and developments in C-PC synthesis and functionality have expanded the potential applications of C-PC in biotechnology, diagnostics, foods and medicine: The productivity of C-PC has been increased in heterotrophic, high cell density cultures of the. phycocyanin may also be found in Cryptophyta, Glaucophyta, Rhodophyta, and Dinophyta., Phycocyanin is produced commercially in outdoor, photoautotrophic cultures of the cyanobacterium A. platensis (syn. Spirulina platensis) grown in open ponds and raceways predominantly at tropical and subtropical locations around the Pacific Ocean. Production of A. platensis has also been investigated as far North such as Italy and Spain.
