Abstract

The current investigation consists of two experiments, the first experiment aimed to evaluate eleven foreign mango cultivars Kent, Palmar, Yasmina rose, Shelly, Nam Doc Mai, Osten, Glenn, Sensation, Kensington pride, Heidi, and Joa in two successive seasons of 2018 and 2019 under Egyptian environmental conditions. This study carried out in a private orchard located at Almansoria, Giza Governorate, Egypt. Trees were 4-5-year-old, planted, at 2 × 4 m space, cultivated in a sandy soil under drip irrigation system. This study was laid out in a randomized complete block design with 11 treatments and three replications to evaluate mango cultivars for floral aspects, fruit yield, its components, fruit quality characteristics and vegetative characteristics. Results indicated that Sensation and Yasmina rose cultivars produced the highest fruit yield per tree.Osten, Yasmina rose, and Kent cultivars gained the maximum fruit weight. The uppermost value of fruit retention (%) was noticed for Palmar, Osten, and Joa cultivars. As for the initial fruit set, the highest value was found in Heidi and Yasmina rose cultivars. While Sensation, Heidi and Kensington pride cultivars revealed the highest value of fruit pulp firmness at the early stage of ripening in July. The highest percentage of pulp per fruit was recorded with Osten, Shelly, Yasmina rose, Kensington pride and Glenn cultivars. The lowest fruit fibers and total acidity percentage were found in Glenn cultivar. The fruits of Nam Doc Mai cultivar contained the highest total soluble solids and total sugar percentages, whereas fruits of Heidi cultivar contained the highest value of vitamin C. Alternate bearing habit were recorded with Kensington pride, Palmer, and Shelly cultivar, while all other cultivars were regular in bearing. The highest number of the vegetative shoots per tree was recorded in Kent and Palmar, Joa, Glenn and Osten cultivars, The vegetative growth was the best in Osten cultivar, it recorded the highest values of shoot length, shoot thickness, leaf area, specific leaf areaand photosynthetic pigments content. While Shelly cultivar showed less vegetative growth. Mango cultivars Kent, Nam Doc Mai, Kensington Pride, Sensation, Yasmina rose, Osten, Heidi, Glenn, Shelly, Palmer and Joa were highly recommended to be cultivated successfully in descending order under the Egyptian environmental conditions based on relatively better fruit setting and quality. but regarding better fruit yield and its component the cultivars were Sensation, Joa, Yasmina rose, Heidi, Kent, Palmer, Osten, Shelly, Glenn, Nam Doc Mai and Kensington Pride in descending order. The Second experiment was conducted during two successive seasons 2021 and 2022 to evaluate the performance of some scion of foreign imported mango cultivars (Keitt, Naomi, Osten and Shelly) on three rootstocks (Sukkary, Zebda and 4/9) grown inplastic bags with a diameter of 20 cm and a height of 40 cm, In a mixture of soil consisting of sand and peat moss in a ratio of 4: 1 with mist irrigation system in a private orchard nursery at Almansoria, Giza Governorate, Egypt. This experiment was laid out in a split-plot design to study the success, initial growth performance and vegetative characteristics. Results clearly showed that grafting of studied different mango cultivars on Sukkary, Zebda and 4/9 rootstocks had a significant influence on studied growth parameters. The highest number of leaves/scions was found in Keitt and Naomi cultivars grafted on 4/9 rootstock, moreover, number of growth cycles /scion was the highest in Naomi cultivar grafted on 4/9 rootstock. Grafting Osten, Keitt and Naomi cultivars on 4/9 rootstock enhanced stem height above the grafting area. The highest leaf area was found with Osten cultivar grafted on 4/9 rootstock. The obtained results clear that 4/9 rootstock present a promising performance under Egyptian conditions.
