Abstract

Vitiligo is a multifactorial depigmented, immune mediated disease affects primarily the skin and/or hair and is characterized by melanocytes loss.
The pathogenesis of Vitiligo is complex and the exact mechanism remains elusive. The disease is thought to result from a combination of immune , genetic , neural,oxidative stress and environmental influences.
It is likely that an intrinsic alteration in epidermal melanocytes plays a very important role in disease expression.
WNT and WIF1 are cellular proteins expressed in the entire of the melanocytes , involved in numerous processes such as cellular growth, differentiation ,proliferation, and melanogenesis.
A role of WIF1 in epidermal melanocytes proliferation ,melanogenesis and migration is under extensive research.
This study was done to clarify the role of WIF1 in the pathogenesis of Vitiligo and to detect the effect of their tissue level on disease severity.
The study included 35Vitiligo patients, and 35 healthy volunteers serving as control group. The results of the present study showed significant difference between cases & controls as regards WIF1.
Finally, the present study concluded that WIF1 may play a role in the pathogenesis of Vitiligo.
