Abstract Collapsible soils are moisture-sensitive soils. They are unsaturated soils that can withstand high applied vertical stress with little volumetric change yet display an instantaneous volumetric reduction and a complete change in particle structure when wet. Such rapid and massive loss of volume results in differential settlements, instability of foundations, extensive cracking, and even structure collapse. Soil improvement is known as improving its geotechnical characteristics to be more competent or stronger. Various methods have been used, modified, and updated with increased knowledge and technological advances. The application of those techniques helps stabilize collapsible soil. Recently, geotechnical engineering experts and researchers have been seeking more use of eco-friendly and green materials in different fields. One such alternative is the use of biopolymers, which are produced from agricultural plants or animal products. Bio-mediated soil stabilization is a relatively new technology in geotechnical engineering. |
