Abstract
Background: Intervertebral disc disease is a common chronic condition characterized by the breakdown or degeneration of one or more discs. The incidence of spinal degenerative diseases has increased significantly, and the main sign is chronic low back pain, which seriously affects patients’ health-related quality of life. Aim: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of nursing rehabilitation program on quality of life for patient with vertebral disk. Design: A quasi-experimental design was applied in this study. Sample: Convenience sample was equal 120 vertebral disk patients. Setting: The Outpatient Physiotherapy and Orthopedic Clinics of Beni-Suef University Hospital, Egypt. Tools: Four tools were used. First tool: Interviewing questionnaire which consisted of three parts to assess demographic characteristics of patient, medical history, and knowledge of patient regarding intervertebral disc. Second tool: Patient’s knowledge. Third tool: Numerical pain rating scale. Fourth tool: WHOQOL. Fifth tool: Perceived stress scale. Result: The study showed that, 75.8% of studied patient had a good level of knowledge at post-program, 0% of studied patient had severe pain at post-program, 66.7% of studied patient had high level of quality of life at post-program, and 0% of studied patient had high level of stress at post-program. Conclusion: There was a highly significant positive correlation between knowledge and quality of life of studied patients and also there was a significant negative correlation between their knowledge and stress and pain scores. Recommendation: Research to evaluate the effect of the rehabilitation program on specific type of vertebral disc disease as lumbar disc herniation is recommended.
