Abstract

The management of bladder dysfunction is complex process and patients suffering from it may face many challenges and complications for preservation of continence. The basic principles of the appendico vesicostomy procedure is the creation of a conduit going into a low pressure reservoir, which can be emptied through clean intermittent catheterization via using an easily accessible stoma. Indications for this procedure are refractory neurogenic bladder, refractory idiopathic bladder dysfunction, as an adjunct to reconstruction in congenital urogenital abnormalities and severe urethral stricture disease. Appendico vesicostomy showing low rate of post-operative complication as stomal stenosis, difficult catheterization, prolapse, recurrent UTI of the stoma and high continent rate comparing to other segments used as stoma. The Mitrofanoff procedure can simplify catheterization in children who are dependent upon intermittent catheterization, The appendicovesicostomy is associated with satisfactory outcomes and minimal complications and has the benefit of continent catheterizable stoma.
