Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of interventional radiology in the management of biliary leaks.
The study included thirty patients (seventeen females and thirteen male) whose age ranged from 16 to 67 years (mean age of 48 years) diagnosed with biliary leaks from 2021 to 2023.
All patients underwent appropriate imaging of the biliary tree prior to any intervention for proper assessment of the biliary system, confirm presence of biliary leak and planning for management.
All interventions were done after biloma drainage and considering of ERCP.
It ERCP was not-applicable or failed, PTBD were attempted in all referred cases using either single or double stick techniques and less commonly using sonographic guidance to access peripheral minimally dilated biliary radicles.
In our study bile leak was diagnosed based on biliary discharge from the surgical wound or drain and post-operative imaging revealed collections proved to be of biliary nature upon aspiration.
Bile leaks were categorized into central or peripheral with variable management plans accordingly.
