Abstract

We conducted a case control study of a total of 200 individuals (100 psoriasis patients and 100 matched healthy controls). Patients were subjected to full medical history and complete clinical examination. Three milliliters of whole blood were obtained from healthy donors and psoriasis patients. DNA was extracted from the buffy coat of fresh blood samples and multiplex PCR was performed to determine GSTT1 polymorphism in the isolated DNAs.
In the present study, one hundred patients ranged in age between 18.0 – 60.0 years with a mean age of 41.74 ± 14.08 years for cases group and one hundred patients ranged in age between 20.0 – 62.0 years with a mean age 39.17 ± 11.65 years for control group. Cases group had 47 males and 53 females, while control group had 55 males and 45 females. There was statistically non-significant difference between gender distributions in the two groups. Regarding Special habits, cases group showed 77.0 % Non-smokers and 23.0 % Smokers and control group showed 72.0 % Non-smokers and 28.0 % Smokers.
Regarding BMI (kg/m2), mean BMI was 26.80 ± 3.99 kg/m2 for patients’ group while in control group was 27.70 ± 3.93 kg/m2. There was a statistically significant relation between degree of severity and BMI in patients’ group. As the severity increase BMI increases. Age of onset was 35.07 ± 13.43, with 45.0 % showed mild severity, 31.0 % showed moderate severity, and 24.0 % was severe and duration was 6.75 ± 6.22 years. Family history recorded in 16.0 % of patients. 59.0 % was under treatment and 41.0 had no treatment.
In the present study, GSTT1 present was found in 42.0 % and GSTT1 null was found in 58.0 % of cases while in control it was 45.0 % in GSTT1 present and 55.0% GSTT1 null. the difference was statistically non- significant (p=0.669). OR (1.130) indicated that GSTT1 null is a non-significantly risk genotype associated with development of psoriasis.
The current study’s results showed no association between GSTT1 null genotypes and psoriasis in Egyptian patients. There was a statistically non-significant

association between GSTT1 and gender. GSTT1 null was more frequent in men (63.8%) than in women (52.8%).
The absence of significant differences of the PASI score between subgroups of patients with different GSTT1 genotypes in this study suggests that these genes may not influence the disease severity.
In conclusion results of this study showed no association between GSTT1 null genotypes and
