Abstract This thesis comprises of four main chapters, which are: introduction, results and discussion, biological results and materials and methods. It also includes the figures and references The first chapter is the introduction, which is a literature review describing the general chemical structures and biological importance of polysaccharides including their applications in human health aspects. It presents a specific focus on the effect of polysaccharides as antiviral agents and detailed information describing Arthrospira extracts demonstrating its specifications and importance. It also presents the importance of finding alternative treatments for herpes infections. It also presents a detailed study to understand the interaction between the immune system and viral infection in order to estimate the mode of antiviral action. The second chapter is the results and discussion, which describes and discusses the chemical results obtained from this work. It describes the chemical characters of the obtained separated polysaccharides from the crude Arthrospira polysaccharide extract. We mainly obtained sulfated polysaccharides. The extract was first monitored for polysaccharides and protein concentration. To confirm the polysaccharide concentration, chromatography purification was performed through Ion Exchange chromatography represented in cation and Anion Ion Exchange Column. The better separation was conducted by DEAE-cellulose column in the weak base. Some of the resulted fractions, based on biological data, were further purified by Size Exclusion chromatography, represented in Sephacryl S-100 column. All were quantified for polysaccharides and protein content with same method. |
