Abstract

In the current study a total of 60 patients with post-burn facial mature facial scar were enrolled. Those patients were randomly subdivided into equal group; either fat injection group (n= 30) or platelet rich plasma group (n= 30). This study aimed to compare efficacy of both fat injection and platelet rich plasma in improving outcome of post burn facial scar The main findings in this study were; 1)During follow up, fat injection group had significantly lower (4.67 ± 1.83 vs. 1.87 ± 1.33; p< 0.001) Vancouver score, 2) Fat injection group had significantly higher epidermal thickness during follow up (362.20 ± 92.73 vs. 255.40 ± 90.00 (um);p< 0.001), finally, both techniques were safe and only 2 (6.7%) patients of platelets rich plasma group and 4 (13.3%) patients of fat injection group developed edema that was conservatively relieved Burn injuries not only have immediate stressful consequences but are associated with morbidity, emotional disruption, and altered quality of life. Long-term treatments for burn patients usually involve reconstructive surgeries, hospitalizations, and frequent visits to healthcare facilities which also put socioeconomic burdens on victims and caregivers. Many treatment modalities have been advocated for the treatment of post burn scars but there is no universally accepted treatment protocol. Laser, surgery, radiotherapy, Silicone gel sheet, cryotherapy, interferon, 5-fluorouracil, and intralesional corticosteroids have all been used alone or in combinations, with variable success. Many previous studies separately evaluated fat injection and platelet rich plasma in treatment of post-burn scar. These studies stated that autologous fat injection and platelet rich plasma can be used in almost every area of the face to improve mature scars and fibrotic tissues in terms of skin texture, color, volume, softness, and quality of skin patterns.
