Abstract

Bullying is a common problem for students that often requires cognitive or behavioral strategies to deal with negative outcomes. The methods that are chosen by many students to cope with a stressful problem such as bullying, may vary from person to person and also differ from how they address other distressing events. Therefore, it is vital to understand the nature of coping strategies with bullying and the various factors that may influence students’ choices to implement specific strategies. Such factors include how often the student is involved in bullying, either as a victim or as the bully (Wójcik & Rzeńca, 2021).
Aim of the study:
This study aimed to assess Coping Pattern Related to Bullying Exposure among Nursing School Students through:
1. Assessing nursing students’ knowledge related to bullying.
2. Assessing nursing students’ exposure to different types of bullying.
3. Assessing nursing students’ coping pattern related to bullying exposure.
Research questions:
4. What is the level of knowledge of nursing student related to bullying?
5. What is the nursing students’ coping pattern related to bullying exposure?
6. Is there a relation between the level of knowledge of nursing students and their coping pattern?
Subjects and Methods:
Design: Descriptive design.
Setting: The study conducted at five nursing schools affiliated to Giza Directorate of Health Affairs Giza governorate in Egypt namely; Boulaq El Dakror Nursing School, 6th of October Nursing School, Embaba Nursing School, Omranyah Nursing School, and El moatmedia Nursing School.
Subjects: It consisted of Convenience sample (208 students) of all nursing students in the previously mentioned settings from both sexes at first, second, and third grades.
Tools: Two tools were used for data collection
Tool I: Self-administer questionnaire (Appendix1): contains 3 parts
• Part I: Nursing students’ personal data and included 9 questions.
• Part II: Nursing students’ knowledge and included 14questions.
• Part III: Nursing students’ response to bullying exposure that included:
A. Bullying exposure (2 questions), number of exposure (3 questions), sources of bullying, (7 questions), responses (reaction) to bullying (8 questions).
B. Types of bullying exposure (physical bullying (7 questions), verbal bullying (9 questions), social bullying (questions5), sexual bullying (7 questions), cyber bullying (4 questions).
C. Consequences(effect) of bullying (physical effect (7questions), psychological effect (7questions), academic effect (4 questions).
Tool II: Coping pattern scale (Appendix2): it included (physical coping pattern (6 questions), psychological coping pattern (10 questions), religious coping pattern (2 questions), emotional coping pattern (4 questions), behavioral coping pattern (3 questions).
The study results revealed the following:
The current study results reveal that, more than half (58.2%) of the nursing school students were female. More than one- third (40.9%) of them were in the second academic year., More than half (59.1%) of them do not have sufficient monthly income.
The current study results reveal that less than two-thirds (61.5%) of the nursing school students had unsatisfactory knowledge regarding bullying; while more than one-third (38.5%) of them had satisfactory knowledge. Less than a half (42.4%) of them got information from internet, while more than half a quarter (13.9%) of them got information from books.
The current study results reveal that less than one quarter (24.6%) of the nursing school students were exposed to physical bullying, while more than a quarter (26.4%) of them were exposed to verbal bullying. More than three-quarters (77.9%) of studied the nursing school students had exposed to bullying while less than a quarter (22.1%) of them didn’t expose to bullying.
The current study results reveal that more than half (56.3%) the nursing school students had psychological consequences, while more than a quarter (28.4%) of the studied the nursing school students had exposed to physical consequences. More than two-thirds (68.5%) of them had exposed to consequences, while less than one-third (31.5%) of them had not exposed consequences.
The current study results reveal that less than a quarter (23.6%) of them had psychological coping pattern, and more than half a quarter (14.4%) of them had religious coping pattern. Less than one quarter (24.5%) of nursing school students had emotional coping pattern. Less than three quarters (73.6%) of them had passive coping, while more than a quarter (26.4) of them had active coping.
Conclusion
Based on the research questions and study results:
According to current study results less than two-thirds of the nursing school students had unsatisfactory knowledge regarding to bullying. More than three-quarters of the nursing school students had exposed to bullying. Less than three quarters of the nursing school students had passive coping pattern. It was concluded that there was a highly statistically significant relation between total level of nursing school students’ total knowledge and their total pattern of coping regarding bullying.
