Abstract

Down Syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability. This study aimed to increase nutritional awareness among mothers of children with Down syndrome through the application of a nutritional counseling program. The research sample included 50 children with Down syndrome (28 males and 22 females) ages 6-11 from Assiut City . Data on social and economic status and health history were collected. BMI was calculated using measurements of body weight and height. The results revealed that most of the mothers are illiterate and housewives. Most of the children suffer from obesity (64), and some of them suffer from problems in the teeth and in the digestive system. Also, the results revealed that the knowledge of mothers’ about Down syndrome disease and it’s symptoms
as well as proper cooking methods suitable for the child were increased . In the second session, the mother’s knowledge of the importance of building foods increased, and in the third session, mothers’ awareness their increased about energy foods that contain carbohydrates and fats, their sources, and its importance for the health of the child. In the fourth session, prevention foods, which are vitamins and minerals, were discussed, as were the roles of vitamins A, B, C, D , folic acid, and zinc. In the fifth session, the awareness of meal planning to suit the child was increased . Also, the results revealed that the children with Down syndrome are shorter in height and their body mass index is higher when compared to healthy children of the same age, so this study recommended taking nutritional initiatives and campaigns to reduce the risks of obesity in children with Down syndrome through a balanced diet.
