Abstract

Alopecia areata is a condition that affects hair follicles and leads to hair loss ranging from small well-defined patches to complete loss of all body hair. Alopecia areata is associated with other autoimmune disorders that carry a high risk of CVD. However, there is a lack of reports on the association of cardiovascular comorbidities and AA.
CCL20 expression has a strong association with vascular endothelial inflammation, reflects systemic inflammation, and may serve as a potential biomarker of impaired vascular health in autoimmune skin diseases.
It could be useful to establish a high concentration of Hs-CRP that can be used by clinicians for diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, cardio embolic or ischemic stroke, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Carotid intima-media thickness increase is considered a preclinical stage of atherosclerosis. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the related risk factors for CIMT to facilitate the early prevention of CVD.
The present study aimed to evaluate the cardiovascular risk in patients with AA by measuring serum level of CCL20, lipid profile, Hs-CRP and CIMT in AA patient in comparison to controls. The current study was a cross-sectional study that included 40 patients with AA and 20 apparently healthy individuals age- and sex-matched as the control group.
