Abstract

The number of patients undergoing pancreatic surgery has increased dramatically in the last decades. At the same time, outcomes have improved. Postoperative mortality rates have decreased from nearly 20% in the 1980s to 1%-2% thanks to centralization policies, advances in surgical technique, perioperative care and multidisciplinary management of complications. However, even in high-volume centers (i.e., institutions performing more than 15-20 pancreatic resections per year) patients still experience significant postoperative morbidity and full recovery after surgery takes longer than we think. patients undergoing pancreatic cancer resection take around 6 mo to return to their preoperative quality of life. This finding suggests that an effort should be made to improve perioperative care and support patients in their recovery with the aim to reduce postoperative disability.
