Abstract

Two field experiments were conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Alexandria University, at Alexandria, during 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 winter seasons. The present work aimed to study the effect of intercropping of some winter crops, at different plant densities, on productivity and land use efficiency of sugar beet. Sugar beet (Beta valgaris L.) cultivar Athospoly, was the main crop. Three winter crops, i.e., wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Misr 1, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar Giza 126 and faba bean (Vicia faba L.) cultivar Nubarariah 1, were used as the companion crops. A Split plot design with three replications was used. The main plots were three companion crops percentages as a percentage of the full plant density ( 100 %, 75 % and 50 %). Sub plots were three intercropping treatments ( ” sugar beet + wheat”, “sugar beet + barley” and “sugar beet + faba bean”). In addition to solid plantings of sugar beet, wheat, barley and faba bean at 100 % plant density. The sub plots area included two wide beds (1.20 m width × 3 m length) for intercropping treatments or four ridges (0.6 m width × 3 m length) for pure stands of faba bean , or its equivalent flat area for wheat and barley. The sugar beet solid cropping was carried out on ridges (0.6 m width × 3 m length × 0.2 m between hills) in three sub units, each of four ridges. The recorded data: i. Sugar beet characters: Vegetative characters (root length (cm), root diameter (cm), root fresh weight /plant (kg) and leaf area /plant (m2), yield characters (top/root ratio, Biological yield (ton/ha. Root yield (ton/ha), Harvest index (%) and quality characters (Total soluble solids (TSS), sugar (S%), purity (%) and sugar yield(t/ha). ii. Companion crop characters: A,B - Wheat and barley characters: Plant height (cm), 100 grain weight (g), biological yield (t /ha), grain yield (t/ha) and harvest index (%). C- Faba bean characters: Seeds number/pod, pods number/plant, 100-seed weight (g), biological yield (t /ha), seed yield (t /ha) and harvest index (%). iii. Competitive relationships and yield advantage: Relative crowding coefficient (K), aggressivity (Agg), land equivalent ratio (LER) and dry matter equivalent ratio (DMER).
